Citric Acid

Citric acid is a weak organic acid used as an acidulant, chelator, and preservative in supplements, primarily for pH control and mineral binding.

Citric acid is ubiquitous, but functionally specific.

It is the most common acidulant in supplements, used for pH control, flavor modulation, and as a chelator that binds minerals.

At a high level, evaluation comes down to three signals:

  • Acidulant function — whether it serves as a primary pH controller or a supportive excipient
  • Chelation capacity — whether it binds minerals in a way that affects absorption or stability
  • Formulation role — whether it acts as a preservative, flavor enhancer, or active component

Citric acid is often treated as a neutral carrier.

Its chelation properties are not passive. It binds calcium, magnesium, and other minerals, which can alter bioavailability and stability.
